Dear 2012

Dear 2012,

Wow, what a year you have been! You were a year I had been anticipating for so long in so many ways. There were big life changes made this year and I can't believe I actually made it through alive and well. Now you are almost over and I can't help but reflect on how blessed I have been this last year.

I spent my first true semester in a classroom and fell in love with a group of kids I never imagined myself teaching, even in my wildest dreams. It's amazing how things work out, isn't it? Little did I know I was hand picked for that group of kids. God knew exactly what he was doing when he placed me in that classroom. Those kids were perfect for me and I can say in confidence that I was perfect for them. We got to dive deep into slavery, war, and civil rights together but I know I learned more from them than they learned from me. It was exhausting, irritating, frustrating, and perfect in every way. I was forced to take a good, hard, look at myself and am a better person and teacher because of it.

After four seemingly short years I graduated from the University of Georgia with my degree in Middle Grades Education. Every year at UGA passed more quickly than the one before it and I wasn't ready for it to end. I cannot even begin to express how thankful I am for the opportunity to start and finish at such a wonderful institution. My dad has always been quick to remind Haley and I not to take our education for granted. We know there are so many people who would have loved to attend UGA but couldn't for different reasons. My education is one thing I will always be thankful for. Athens and UGA will always hold the most special place in my heart.

I finally got to walk down the aisle and marry my best friend after seven and a half years together. The date had been set for nearly four years but when it finally arrived it felt like it couldn't be here already. We aren't old enough for this, are we? We worked day and night for over a year to make sure everything was perfect for our day. It felt funny to sit back and have everything done for us that weekend, but that's exactly what we wanted. We wanted to enjoy our time with our friends and family and enjoy we did! The week we spent in Jekyll will always be the best week of my life. It's been six months and it still feels like yesterday. Is that how it will always be? I can only hope it is because I never want to forget that feeling.

Now, here's where I'll be honest. This is one change I wasn't happy about in 2012. Getting through the wedding was my main focus and I didn't let myself think about what would happen after it was over. I didn't want to think about leaving Athens. Somehow I kept pushing that to the back of my mind and pretending we could find a way to stay. Like so many others, I love Athens. Like, serious love. As in, it took me two months to move my things after the wedding... And, if I'm being totally honest, it's only because my sister had to find a roommate. If that hadn't happened I can guarantee you that my room would still be the same. I didn't want to leave Athens, UGA, Hilsman, my friends, and especially my sister. I don't do well with change; I am a creature of habit to the extreme. Moving to a totally new place didn't sit well with me, but over time I have adjusted and am learning to love my new home. Marriage isn't all fun and games! Especially when a certain someone gets a fantastic job they love and drag you away from everything you've ever known! But, in this scary time I couldn't be more thankful for my husband and his job. We're getting there!

Along with moving to a totally new place came working in a school system I knew nothing about. I started substituting in Dalton so I could get a feel for the area and the schools. I am so thankful for the work and to be back with the kids. I spend most of my time in the same Elementary school and I absolutely adore it. Never in a million years did I think I would love those kids so much. I have learned that I can teach something other than middle school and that feels pretty darn good. I hope to be more settled next year and find a teaching job, but only time will tell!

We've got some exciting plans I can't wait to share with you when the time comes. This has been the best year yet but life just keeps getting better! The best is yet to come!

2012 - You have been so good to me and I am looking forward to what 2013 holds!

Love,

Happy 25th to my better half!

Happy twenty-fifth birthday to my sweet husband!

We couldn't be any more different if we tried and I am so thankful that "opposites attract." You drive me nuts every day but I never could (and still can't) stay away from you! You are the sweetest and most kind person with the biggest heart I've ever seen. You keep me laughing, at you and at myself, all the time. You would do anything for anyone, whether you know them or not, even if they have treated you badly in the past. That's what I love most about you. You show me what love is every day and love me unconditionally when I don't deserve it. You put up with all my craziness and support me in whatever I believe, think, say, and do. You have no idea how thankful I am for that and for you. You work so hard every day and take better care of me than I ever could have imagined! I am so lucky! You really are my better half. I have loved every moment of the last eight years and I cannot wait for many more years with you!

A month of milestones!

December is always a big month for us. I'm obviously a Christmas fanatic so it's my favorite month of the year in that respect. As I've said before, I will make up absolutely any reason to celebrate anything. This month we have celebrated several (albeit small) milestones!

December 3rd marked our six month anniversary. It is ridiculous that we have been married for six months! It seems like it was just yesterday that we were visiting Jekyll for the first time, buying wedding bands, and boarding the plane to the Dominican Republic! Speaking of that, Chris when are we going back? I'm expecting an answer in the comments! ;)

December 4th marked two years since we got engaged! We celebrated by going to the Christmas parade in Gatlinburg as usual. Unfortunately, it was much too warm for snow this year! Chris got the email that told him it was time for my ring check up a few days ago so we trekked down to Shane Company to get it done while he was off work. While we were there we realized I'd been wearing it for two years! No wonder it was looking so rough! After leaving it for a couple of days it looks as shiny as it did the day he gave it to me and I am so glad to have it back!

Today, December 19th, we have been together for EIGHT YEARS. What? Not possible. I was fourteen and Chris was sixteen when we started, "going out." I was head over heels for him before he even knew I existed and he was way too cool for me! I still don't know how it happened but I am so thankful I "took a chance" (after reading a fortune cookie with those words) on him! I remember our first "date" - Chris driving me home from school - like it was yesterday. I almost threw up I was so nervous (and embarrassed) as we pulled out of the parking lot with Lil Wayne blaring. A month later he gave me flowers and asked me to be his girlfriend. He had a rough exterior but the sweetest heart. Over the years the rough has faded but he still has the same sweet heart I fell in love with as a freshman in high school. So thankful for young love!

Today also marks Grandma Loretta and Papa Wayne's 48th wedding anniversary! We are so lucky to have so many great examples of what marriage should look like around us.

And tomorrow, my sweet husband will be twenty five! I don't know how we got here, but boy it sure has been fun! Stay tuned for a birthday tribute to my boy.

My Best Friend's Wedding (Shower)

My beautiful best friend, Emilee, will be married in 54 short days! I remember how it seemed like I had so much time but at the end it absolutely flew by. The closer it got to the wedding, the more I had to do! Yesterday was five months since the wedding and it seems like time is flying by faster than ever!

Yesterday Mom and I went to one of Em's showers in Habersham and I must admit, I'm loving how the tables have turned! It's fun being on this side of the wedding chaos! This is the only photo I took yesterday as my phone was not cooperating and I discovered my camera was dead...

Today the bridesmaids hosted a shower in Gainesville at 2 Dog Restaurant. We had eighteen people and the food was delish! The shower was "Around the clock," so guests brought gifts that corresponded to morning, noon, or night. We played the purse game, had delicious cupcakes, and had a great time celebrating sweet Em (and you too Kelsey!). I can't wait for the big day in December! I was there when Emilee fell head over heels for Kelsey and I couldn't be happier for them! They are the most perfect couple I know and I'm glad it's finally their time to tie the knot! Here's a few of pictures from the shower:

Thankful Thursday!

I posted yesterday about getting our Engagement Film but I never thought our Wedding Film would come the very next day! I substitute taught all day today so I missed Artworks posting the film on Facebook earlier today. As I was looking through their Vimeo page tonight I saw our silhouettes and almost screamed! Okay, confession: I did scream! I screamed a "Meme scream!" My family knows what I'm talking about! I'm so excited for you all to watch it!

I posted the video to Facebook, but for the few of you who don't have Facebook here's the link:

We couldn't be happier! I am SO thankful to have our day on film to watch for years and years to come! Artworks absolutely blew us away and we can't wait to see more! I am so thankful for their unique talent. I am thankful for my wonderful husband who works so hard to support us and who paid to have our beautiful day caught on film just for me. We are so thankful for our sweet friends and family who traveled to celebrate with us. We are especially grateful to our parents for supporting us and giving us this special day! Blessed!

What to do with Wedding Cards?

Confession time, y'all. I am an enormous pack rat. I am pretty much a borderline hoarder at this point. Not the empty trash piled to your ceiling type; the stuff type. My family makes so much fun of me because of it. I have never really liked to throw anything away, but it has only gotten worse as I've gotten older. I am the most sentimental person you will ever meet, I guarantee it. A lot of it has to do with my grandmother - she kept everything and I am following right in her footsteps - especially anything that has to do with my grandparents since all of them have passed away. I am so afraid of getting rid of something I'll want later or need! Now that I'm a teacher (well, not literally at the moment) it's even worse! I'm always thinking to myself, will I be able to use that in Social Studies? A Science lab? You'd be amazed, right EDMS friends?

I've got a giant chest at my parents house full of middle school and high school memorabilia - cheerleading tags, notes, newspaper clippings, etc - that I can't stand to part with. I've also got a giant hat box full of anything and everything Chris and I could accumulate during our relationship  - that's 8 years worth of notes, ticket stubs, receipts, etc. I think it might have something to do with my love of history. I love learning about anything - seriously - but especially people and how they change over time. I love looking back at my grandparents dating photos, or hearing stories about my dad's childhood growing up on Black Rock. I can't wait to share my life with my children, and what better way to do that than though showing them things that meant so much to me at one point in my life? Do I need those BAR slips from my friends in Middle School? No way. But each one of them has a story attached to them that I can't wait to share. My version of "How I met your mother," I suppose...

Anyway, my hoarding tendencies only got a thousand times worse when we got engaged! I have saved every. little. thing. that has had anything to do with the engagement and wedding. I've got yet another box full of those things. I keep getting the box out to look through it and decided I wanted to do something more fun with some of my things.

If you're on Pinterest you've probably seen these things floating around for a while now and I finally decided to make my own. My first project was this "Wedding Card Book." This is all the cards we got at the showers and at the wedding. It's a pretty thick book so I had to use two large binder clips. I found the clips at Wal-Mart for less than $2.00 a pack in the office supplies section. The pack included four large clips and four small clips. All I did was use the hole punch and try to keep in centered so the cards were even. I stacked my cards from largest (in the back) to smallest (in the front) and used a pretty card for the front. Thanks to my sweet, sweet, friend Sarah Richards for this beautiful card!

After that one I decided to make a few other ones! This next one is specifically our wedding paraphernalia. It includes:

Wedding Invitation
Guest accommodation card
Response card
Our three wedding shower invites
Engagement Party Invite
Rehearsal Dinner Invite
Guest responses (RSVP's, both yes and no)

This one is probably my favorite! If you registered at Gift Garden or Davis Brothers you know what these are - the cards on all the presents that say what the gift is and who it is from. Most of them have hand written notes from the giver. I kept every single one! I will cherish these forever! I love reading the sweet thoughts from the ladies at our church in their beautiful handwriting and the funny ones from my friends! This way I will never forget who gave me what gift. I put a tag from our gift bags at the wedding on the front for the "cover."

Lastly, I decided to put my post card collection on a small ring. I don't have many but my collection is growing. I decided to start this when I went to Italy last summer and it's so fun to look back at where I've been.

If you go anywhere interesting, send me a post card please!

I made one other one for miscellaneous cards but didn't take a picture of it. I only used the ones I had here in Dalton because the rest are in a box (shocker) at home.

What do you think? Are cards worth keeping? I vote YES!

Happy three months!

You guessed it! Today marks our three month wedding "anniversary!" As I've written before, I love any excuse to celebrate anything. You can make up some crazy excuse to celebrate something bizarre and I'll be right there with you! Chris and I are going out to dinner tonight... but that has less to do with our "three months" and more to do with the fact that we have eaten ham for every meal for a week and are ready for something different! Where should we go? That's one thing I love about Dalton, there is so much more to choose from. Granted, it's not Athens, but that's alright! Plus, we are just down the road from Chattanooga and I love that! It's a dreary day today and we are just hanging out. We've got some errands to run and I've got a mini project I'll share soon. Nothing too exciting, but it does't take much to make me happy these days! Now, I'll leave you with some of my favorite wedding photos to commemorate the occasion. I know, you're so tired of seeing them right? I look at them every day and I'm still not tired of them! Sorry ;)

Sarah DeShaw is the best ever.

The dreaded name change

As of yesterday I am officially finished with the name change process! I know what you're thinking, it's about time? Well confession time, y'all. I'm the world's worst procrastinator. Shocker, I know. In less than a week we will have been married for three months so needless to say I'm glad to be done! I'm the type of person that puts off things that I don't know how to do. There's been all this talk about the dreaded DMV (technically DDS, but who calls it that?) and how crowded and horrible it is, so I have successfully talked myself out of going for almost three months. Chris and I went to the Social Security office about a month ago to get my new SS card and it was a breeze. There were only about four people in there and the lady that helped us was super sweet.

Chris kept trying to talk me into going while he was conveniently working, but that did not fly. I told him, "If it was up to me I wouldn't have changed my name, so you are not getting out of this one buddy!" He dreaded going so much that he tried to talk me out of changing my name. Hah! We are pathetic. Unfortunately it was already on our marriage application so we were stuck! We looked up the requirements online a zillion times but I still found it confusing. I swear that different pages told us different things! In case any of you are wondering, here is what I needed:

Certified copy of my birth certificate (25 bucks at the courthouse. Ripoff)
Old Drivers License (bye-bye cute teenage photo)
New Social Security Card
Marriage Certificate (The actual certificate sent after the wedding)
Application for Marriage (I needed this to show that I was hyphenating my name)
2 proofs of residency (bank statement, bill sent to that address, etc)

We got there at about 8:15 and there were only about five people waiting. I actually needed all the above documents so I am so glad I took everything I own with me. Everything was easy peasy until the end. The system was down so the lady said she couldn't put in all my information until it came back up. We could either hang out until it came back up or come back later. I've seen the DMV on the news enough lately to know that "coming back later" would be disastrous. Fortunately she said we could bypass the line and come straight back to her to get my temporary card. AKA, see ya later homegirl! We left the office and headed back into town for a while. We went to Chick-fil-a for breakfast, and made pit stops at Hobby Lobby, TJ Maxx, and Big Lots before heading back. The system was back up and we were good to go! I'm glad I got to bypass the line because the office was ridiculously crowded! Screaming babies and all. I am SO thankful to have that done, y'all! It was like a little rain cloud hanging over my head! Now if I can just figure out the paperwork for substituting here, I'll be golden.

After we were done we went to the grocery store and stopped by Honey Baked Ham to use an old gift certificate Chris got from work. Another confession: I am obsessed with Ham. Like, ugly obsessed. I swear I could eat it every meal, every day, for the rest of my life. We picked up our 8 pound baby and headed to the house! Ham and Macaroni and Cheese? Yes, please! Needless to say, yesterday was a very happy day at the Watts-Savage house!

{PS, if you missed my post about hyphenating my name read it here}

Thinking back on June 3rd

Today marks two months since our wedding day. I cannot believe it has been two months... It really seems like it just happened yesterday! It's crazy, isn't it? All those preparations for one day I can barely remember? It went by so quickly that most of it seems like a blur! Thank goodness for our fantastic wedding photographer, Sarah DeShaw. I am so thankful for her and her amazing talent. That is the number one piece of advice I would give brides - make sure you pick a photographer that you are totally confident in because the day is a whirlwind and they will be your best friend when all is said and done! If you know me you know I am a procrastinator to the extreme. That being said, we finally got around to getting the rights to our photos so hopefully I will be able to post some of my favorites in the next couple of weeks. We are still anxiously awaiting our wedding videos from Artworks Wedding Cinemas. They do awesome work and we are dying to see our videos! Good things take time though, right? I will post them here as soon as we get them!

Thanks to my sweet friend, Rebecca McDowell, for this gorgeous photo of our beautiful sign! Stay tuned for more information about the sign ;)

In the days before the wedding I was a mess! Over the past few weeks I have told several people I wouldn't do it over again... That's a bit of an exaggeration - I would just do things a little differently so I would have been a little less stressed. Now that the wedding is a fond memory, I am so thankful for our beautiful experience. I can finally say all that hard work was truly worth it. I will never be able to thank my parents enough for giving me everything I could have ever wanted. My mom and sister worked around the clock for over a year and I am indebted to them forever! When I look back I am still amazed that it went off without a hitch (almost). I am so thankful that Chris and I have wonderful memories of our wedding to share with our children and grandchildren. That is why it was so important to me.

Happy two months to the sweetest husband a girl could ever ask for! I can't wait to celebrate many more with you!

Love this man!

What's in a name?

Settle in, make yourself comfortable, and get ready for a long, bumpy ride. Let me remind you, I am certified to teach Social Studies and Science, not Language Arts, so I apologize in advance for the mistakes I make. I have been contemplating writing a blog post about this topic since I began my blog almost a year ago. It's something that I have thought long and hard about for several years. I want to explain the reasons behind hyphenating my name and why the decision was so very important for me. This is more for my benefit than anything, but I hope you enjoy reading my thoughts. Feel free to let me know what you think.

I want to preface my story by saying that I am writing about my opinions and personal beliefs. That being said, I respect other people's choices and opinions because I am thankful we have that freedom. I am obviously in the minority with my choice and I'm cool with that so I understand others will disagree with what I say. As a Christian I believe first and foremost in love and tolerance and hope to portray that through my writing. Now, where do I begin?

I’ve always had a tendency to argue, and to do the opposite of what I’ve been told to do. Second child syndrome, maybe? I have never liked the idea of doing something, “Just because.” So, when I was little and my parents would give me the, “Because I said so” excuse, it didn’t fly with me. I like to know why things are the way they are and why people make the choices that they do. I learned a lot about myself while wedding planning – mostly that I am very thoughtful in the choices I make. I research all the options, and have to know I have seen every option before making a decision. I definitely did this when I planned the wedding, so it only makes sense to do the same for the marriage.

I grew up in what I would consider an egalitarian household. My parents had equal say-so in our family; neither one had more power than the other. No one was ever expected to do something just because of an old school scripted gender role. I didn’t grow up in a household where my father expected to come home from work to a spotless house and be served dinner on a silver platter. They both worked so why should she come home, cook dinner, serve him, and clean up after him, just like she would a child? I’m not saying you shouldn’t do things for your spouse; I’m just saying one person shouldn’t be put on a pedestal at the expense of the other. Both my parents did thoughtful things for the other because they wanted to, not because they had to. I can’t begin to tell you how thankful I am for that and that is how I want my marriage to be. To me, marriage is not about two halves making a whole – it’s about two people coming together and making each person their best self.

I’ve always been extremely close with my dad and that has had a profound impact on my identity. Several years ago Dad and I started working on our Watts family tree. If you haven’t done any genealogy research, I can’t encourage you enough to do so. We learned so much about our family that we would have never known if we didn’t start digging. Am I proud of everything we found? No way. If you dig hard enough you will find things you wish you wouldn’t have. For the same reason I believe in history, I believe in genealogy. Let me explain. To truly know yourself and know what you want out of life, you have to know where you come from and what your ancestors have been through.

What does this have to do with my story? Bottom line: It breaks my heart that it is nearly impossible to trace my female ancestors because they are virtually non-existent. So many documents say, “Mrs. John Watts,” or simply, “the wife of…” Their former selves totally disappeared when they got married. Why? Why do we have to throw away part of our identity in order to join with a man in marriage? I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for those women, but does history recognize them? No, basically they had no importance other than giving birth to the next generation of men. Even their gravestones list their husband’s name before their own. Sometimes when I’m reading through the information I’ve gathered, I daydream about what those women were like. What did they look like, sound like, think, feel, believe? They were real, just like me. They played just as important of a role as their husbands, but history doesn’t tell the story that way. This is why I love teaching Social Studies. My students (and my kids) will learn a different side of history than I learned. One that tells the stories of and to all peoples – not just the white man.

During my time at UGA I was lucky enough to get into some great classes that truly changed my life. First and foremost, Women’s Studies. You guessed it, those “crazy” Feminists in the UGA Women’s Studies department got to me! I am still obsessed with my professor, Nichole Ray. She was phenomenal! Hands down the best teacher I ever had and the best class I ever took. Don’t let the name confuse you – it wasn’t just about women’s rights. It was about equality and issues in gender, race, class, and sexuality as social constructs. We discussed everything from politics, healthcare, LGBTQ, minority rights, stereotyping, sexual violence, marketing, body issues, and so much more. Every class made me feel confused, uncomfortable, and sometimes downright mad! I couldn't get enough. As a teacher that's what I want for my kids - I believe the best learning comes when you are forced to listen to what you don't want to hear. I challenge you to do the same. If you only converse with people of your same opinion where will you get? Nowhere – that won’t help you grow as a person. My education professor Jim Garrett always told us, "Uncomfortable is good. I want you to be uncomfortable. Learning happens when we get uncomfortable." I couldn’t agree more! Similar to what I said before about genealogy, I believe you can’t truly fight for what you believe unless you have explored all the other options and heard all the other arguments. Challenge your opinions – it will either change your mind or make you fight even harder for what you believe in.

I know this post has been all over the place and I apologize. I’m going to try and bring it all together to make my point. This post is supposed to explain why I decided to hyphenate my name when I got married last month, and I haven’t even mentioned my husband. Chris and I dated for over seven years before we got married. We literally grew up together and went through several major life events together before getting married. I’m so glad we dated for so long because I know we have created a strong foundation for our marriage. Chris is well aware I’m a Feminist who feels very strongly about her beliefs and he is secure enough in his identity to be with me.

When it came time to apply for our marriage license Chris and I had “The talk.” I had been torn for months and was still unsure about what I wanted to do. I’d discussed my thoughts with so many people: my parents, sister, friends, teachers, mentor teacher, my Italian family, church friends, etc. It seemed like I’d had this conversation a million times and I was still torn. I’d prayed about it, researched it, and read arguments on both sides. I’ll be honest, Chris was leaning towards me totally taking his name and I was leaning towards totally keeping my own. What was I supposed to do?

Let me spell out my argument for you:
·       I have had my name for 22 years and I’m pretty fond of it, why should I change it?
·       Why don’t men change their name if it’s about being “united?”
·       Why do I have to change my name to prove that I made this commitment?
·       What do we benefit from my taking your name?
·       In many other cultures women have and still do keep their birth name.
·       I am not property. Name-changing is an outdated tradition based on outdated principles.
·       It is something I want to do to honor my female ancestors.
·       I feel it is disrespectful to the millions of women who were treated as property and didn’t have this choice.
·       There are still millions of women treated as property, mistreated, and even murdered based on their gender around the world.
·       I am already marrying you – this is how I want to keep my connection to my family that I am very close to.
·       I do not love you any less by keeping my birth name. It’s not about love. It’s about equality.
·       I have spent years learning where I come from – why abandon that?

Arguments I personally heard from other women:
·       It’s tradition. (I’ll give you that – I love me some traditions, but I’m not sure this one is for me.)
·       It’s just what you do. (Why? That’s the point. Remember what I said about “Just because?”)
·       It’s theChristian” thing to do. (How does not changing my name make me less of a “Christian?”)
·       You should be leaving your parents and joining with your husband (I am. What does that have to do with my name? Isn’t that what the marriage certificate, vows, and being married part are for?)
·       It will be hard for your kids. They will be confused. (Then I’ll let them read this blog post.)
·       You will regret it after you have children (Doubt it, but if so I’ll change my name.)
·       People will think you aren’t married (But we are so… who cares?)
·       Either way you are taking the name of a man: Your husband or your father (Good point, it’s a lose-lose if you look at it that way.)
·       “I just want to have the same name as my husband. I love him.” (Okay, good. You should change your name then. I’m cool with that. But, don’t act like that means you love your husband more than I love mine.)

This is by no means an exhaustive list – just the most frequent arguments I gave and received over the past couple of years. In the end we compromised – isn’t that what marriage is all about? As you can tell by the signature on my blog my new name is Cari Brianna Watts-Savage and I’m very happy with it. I feel like those two little words separated by a hyphen give the world a little glimpse into my mind and who I am as a woman. To me they say, “I am the same woman I was before I got married. I am proud to be my parent’s daughter and my husband’s wife.” Okay, maybe I’m a little dramatic but I told you it’s important to me. To answer the question I always get, “What will your students call you?” Don’t worry, I won’t ask my middle schoolers to call me, “Mrs. Watts-Savage.” That’s just brutal! I’ll be Mrs. Savage – it’s more appropriate for a Social Studies teacher anyway, right? I don’t mind being called Mrs. Watts, Mrs. Savage, or Mrs. Watts-Savage. It doesn’t offend me either way – that’s the best part: I get to be all three of those women. Isn’t that awesome?

For anyone who is afraid of marriage, commitment, or losing yourself – you can be married without losing yourself. That’s what this is all about. A good marriage should encourage you to be yourself. I’m so thankful I have that in Chris, and I am so thankful our sons and daughters will have a father who encourages them to be themselves. I thought long and hard about my decision and I wrote this blog post to encourage other women to do the same. I don’t denounce those who choose something other than what I chose. All I’m asking is you think about what you’re doing – don’t just do what you’re expected to because it’s “Traditional.” It’s a big deal, folks, don’t take it lightly.

Lastly, if you think that women’s rights aren’t an issue anymore, you’re wrong. Women have come a long way over the last century, but we still have work to do in our country and especially around the world. But, I’ll save that for another blog post! I could go on and on…

If you’re reading this sentence, you made it through the post—Congratulations!  I hope that all my little anecdotes came together, made sense, and made you think a little bit.  I’d love to hear your thoughts (in agreement or disagreement) so leave me a comment.

A little about me...

Merriam Webster defines Patriarchy as "Social organization marked by the supremacy of the father in the clan or family, the legal dependence of wives and children, and the reckoning of descent and inheritance in the male line; broadly : control by men of a disproportionately large share of power."

I'm working on a very personal blog post on a topic that is very important to me. Hopefully that last e-card gives you a hint as to what it will be about. If you are already annoyed I suggest not staying tuned for the next post. If you find humor in the above images or feel like you aren't sure what they are all about, I would love for you to read my next post and share your thoughts.

Procrastination at its best

Why is it that every time I promise myself I will become a more disciplined blogger I fail? I seem to follow a certain pattern - I churn out one blog post and then don't return to the blogging world for several weeks. Granted I was so busy for a while there my eyes were permanently crossed... but I can't make excuses anymore. Now that I am officially graduated and officially married things have calmed down significantly. I am still living in limbo - somewhere in the middle of Dalton (where my husband lives), Clarkesville (where my parents live), and Athens (my home for the past two years). I didn't move a single thing before the wedding - I don't know who has time to do all that nonsense! Plus, it kind of feels like saving the best for last! I'm moving things slowly but surely, unpacking and playing as I go. I have lots of new things to blog about, and a ton of crafting ideas in the works so stay tuned for more interesting posts!

Four Months Later...

I must admit I completely forgot this blog even existed. Oopsy! So much has happened since I wrote my first post. Well... an entire semester has happened - ending today! Just two more finals and I am home free. I promise I am going to try to post more regularly - maybe this will be one of my many new years resolutions. Maybe I'll get in the habit of posting over Christmas break. My semester has been jam packed with classes, ridiculous middle schoolers, and a little bit of wedding planning. I have so many stories I could tell about my crazy kids but I will save those for another blog post. I know I will have plenty to tell when I am with them every day next semester.

For now here's a little bit about what's been on my mind this weekend. I spent the weekend in Gatlinburg with my sweet fiance for the Christmas Parade. It was a very special weekend for both of us as we celebrated our one year engagement and are officially under the six month mark for the wedding! It was also bittersweet for me because it was my last time staying in the Midtown Lodge. After 73 years they are closing their doors on December 31st. They are literally paving paradise and putting up a parking lot... It's so sad to me when any historic building is torn down, especially one that is so close to my heart. I can kind of understand those crazies who chain themselves to buildings... too bad it's December.

It's not much to look at it but it holds so many memories for my family. Those of you who have lost someone special know what it's like to feel their spirit in a certain place. This is one of those places for me. I could feel my grandparents with me here all weekend and it was so comforting because I miss them tremendously, especially now that Christmas is right about the corner. My grandmother passed away a little over a year ago and this month will mark the thirteenth year my grandfather has been dead. They were the best example of true love, marriage, and Godliness I could imagine. I didn't have them as long as I would have liked but I thank God for blessing my life with them.

Have you ever seen anything so precious? Me neither.

And of course one to celebrate the holidays:

I inherited my crazy obsession with Christmas from them. My love of wrapping presents from Grandpa and my love of buying gifts from Meme. :) If your grandparents are still alive this Christmas do me a favor - appreciate them, listen to their stories, and tell them how much you love them. No matter how many times you do - it can never be enough!
